preparing for a weather emergency

Create an inventory of your personal belongings before a loss occurs. By having this information ahead of time it will be easier for you to file a complete and accurate report that will help settle your claim faster. Here are some guidelines:

  • Videotape, photograph or compile a written inventory of your home and belongings. Photographs or videos can document details such as quality, appearance and size of items that written descriptions cannot and make a good addition to a written inventory.
  • Divide your list into broad categories, such as location (Family Room, Bedroom #1), in order to make grouping your belongings easier.
  • In each room, make a detailed list of every item with its purchase date, price, model and serial numbers, if applicable. (Click here for a printable worksheet to keep track of your belongings.)
    • Do not forget to include the attic, garage, basement and closets.
    • Include the appraised value of antiques, jewelry and other costly possessions.
    • Attach professional, written appraisals when necessary.
    • Keep a copy of the inventory in a fireproof box, or a safe place outside of your home, such as in a safety deposit box. Also include a copy of your insurance policy or policy number.
    • Update your inventory annually and keep receipts for all "big ticket" items.

Review your coverage. Make sure that you have adequate coverage provided by your homeowners insurance policy. Discovering that you are underinsured after a loss can be stressful. Also note that there are specific limits on some items that might need to be separately insured. Your independent agent or Travelers of New Jersey representative can help you determine whether your possessions are sufficiently protected by your homeowners or renters insurance.

Plan your escape route. In an emergency, it is very important that everyone reacts quickly and safely to the situation. Make sure that everyone knows the escape routes and where to meet once outside the house. Many fire departments will provide detailed information on planning escape routes in the event of a fire. For more information, contact your local fire department.
